MoCCA Artfest 2007: Oh the wonderful!

I had a great, great time at MoCCA.

I should preface this by saying that yes, I do indeed know that the MoCCA gurus prefer that the Artfest is referred to by "Artfest" and not "MoCCA", but I have yet to change my ways fully. Can we compromise, and when I'm speaking directly with you I'll say "Artfest", and yet when I'm typing really fast and impatiently I can get away with "MoCCA"?

To continue, I had a great time at MoCCA. Artfest. I got to see some truly delightful artwork and spend time with some even more delightful people! And what really made me happy was having the personal satisfaction of producing an issue of my minicomic that I felt was up to my expectations of progress. No In-Between continues to improve in quality of artwork... I had more than just a successful time drawing this issue, I had a fun time. Awesome.

This year I had a stellar deal, a 6-for-the-price-of-5 package of the issues of NiB thus far, which coincidentally was EXACTLY the amount of money needed to qualify for the 'while supplies last' offer of one of my homemade buttermilk soda scones. I made them each morning of the fest, Saturday being a craisin-studded variety and Sunday being chocolate-chip oriented. I particularly enjoyed the craisin ones myself, but all of them seemed to go over very well despite a few people thinking they were free and just grabbing one. (Didn't your mothers tell you to READ the sign before you picked up something and put it in your mouth? HONESTLY, there could have been arsenic in those if I were a different person!)

I also had warm-up sketches, which were a win-win-win scenario all the way around. I get my hand, wrist and brain ready for action, I make something cool that I don't feel bad about selling cheaply ($3 each), and some person out there gets to own an original piece of artwork without paying a lot of money.

Lastly, I had my Squid 'n Whale: Forbidden Friends stickers which were cute and popular. I love those 'lil guys. It's time to do something cute and awesome with them, like a comic or at least some buttons, so people can have a more permanent way of displaying their love for all that is cetaceaus and cuddly.

Going back to No In-Between briefly, I am so glad Italy is wrapped up now. It marks the end of my launching off point, and the start of some real exploration into the murkiness of the main character as well as the chance to draw some different architecture and scenery. I'm moving on to Austria, and I should have the first in that series done for San Diego Comic-Con. Austria will be shorter than Italy, perhaps 3 issues. I'm outlining the story tonight and tomorrow.

My goals for SDCC are: update website, do NiB #7, do Squid 'n Whale stuff, make buttons, one watercolor painting and one additional drawing to be made into a watercolor.

whoa nelly. I've got what, three weeks? YES. Go, baby! :)

More photos!

See the scrumptulescent sign behind goraina? She made the art and did the legwork to make that baby come into being!

The other half of the table! Notice Teen Boat! A new DOUBLE SIZED ISSUE! It's a doozy!

I usually offer to do sketches inside the front cover of my minicomics. Quick little scenes, or talking heads, something to make it personal and fun. Dalton Webb bought the most recent 2 issues of No In-Between and lo, I suddenly made a sketch so symphonious in its line and symmetry that I had to draw a bad one in the following comic I signed for him due to the fact that I was a)still stunned from the previous one and b)somewhat irked that I had to give it away. So I took a picture.

I can only hope I haven't peaked with that one sketch. If I have, well, I couldn't have given it to a nicer guy. :)

Last photo is of brunch!

crypticpress and I joined cori_lee, goraina, astroboy12, and daltonnw for brunch at Maison in midtown Monday morning, it was a great way to chat with friends right before they left and the lot of us felt a degree of MoCCA 'hangover' which involved sore throats and a general feeling of elated exhaustion.

Sorry I had to miss the brunch. It was great seeing you guys at the show; there's never enough time to do it all, though. Your table looked fantastic!

The backgrounds in your minis, like that one you did for Dalton above, are really awesome. Also, I totally failed to get minis from you during the show. Any chance you could mail me some, if you've got any left? I'd be happy to paypal whatever, etc.

The only thing that could have made it better would have been for me to be smart enough to snap up your minis before they were gone. Alas. It was great to see you, as always, Marion!
