04:07 pm - Update from the Upper West Side...
...of the country. ;)

supergirl

Oregon Country Fair came, went, and was a lot of fun. I got a tarot card reading so accurate it made me cry. I got enough breema and thai massage to get rid of my back pain. I reconnected with old friends here and abroad, and I have been getting a full nights sleep every night with adventures every day. It's good to be home!

Today I am working on commissions and trying to prepare for San Diego amidst all the distractingly wonderful people and activities around here. Dave! I owe you an NYCC spreadsheet! Working on it! :D

02:52 pm - Friends of Lulu Calls for Volunteers!
From the Friends of Lulu Blog:

We need some comics-community-minded volunteers to help out with the growth of Friends of Lulu! We don't need you to sign your life away or make major commitments to the end of time. We just want a few hours of you over the course of the next six months and in return you get to know a lot of people in comics- as well as the people on the Board who are all in different stages of illustrious careers themselves!

  • Designated "point" person for daily inquiries to our "info" email
  • Newsletter coordinator/ assistant editor
  • Reporters
  • Website Wranglers
  • Copy Writers
  • Convention Organizers/volunteers

  • Just send us an e-mail at board @ friends-lulu.org.

Now if you've read this far, and you think to yourself, "Yeah sure that's great, but I really want to be involved on the INSIDE!" then consider a position on the National Board! We've got a few positions opening up, including (but not exclusively! ) Membership Secretary, Recording Secretary and Treasurer—if you have anywhere from five to ten hours a week that you'd like to spend making a difference in the comics community for the next year, then drop us an e-mail at board @ friends- lulu.org!

In other news, I continue to work hard on commissions, write, and prepare for San Diego Comic-Con, woooooo! :D

    11:08 am - New No In-Between update!
NiB9, page 8 excerpt No In-Between is updated on webcomicsnation.com!

oooo! The end of the flashback and we're presented with the beginning of a new chapter- for a while!

I have to take NiB on hiatus for the rest of the summer- I am finishing up the writing of it and getting ready for what I hope will be the next evolution in this story. In the meantime, however, I will be posting photos from my trip. Many of them you will find hilarious. Many of them you will wonder what on earth I was thinking! The rest will be just pretty landscapes. ;)

    So, enjoy!

In other news, I continue to spend time working on commissions and proposal writing. It's not visual or glamorous yet, so I'll just do some song and dance here to keep you all interested. :)

Or better yet, watch Matt do it. It's much more satisfying:

    10:15 am - Project : Rooftop submission!

    Superman: Man of Style

I realize now that I should have had him holding a Model T or something. :)
This is my submission to the Superman: Man of Style contest that Project : Rooftop is doing.

You might remember me talking about how I think that Christopher Reeve's Superman is a great example of a JC Leyendecker man. So I based my costume re-design off of the classic Leyendecker Football Player and tried to draw the prettiest man I could.

I got to thinking- you know, I still see way more focus on beautiful women then I do on beautiful men in comics and illustration. Manga has this whole space oddity-androgyny thing going for it, so I don't really see it so much as celebrating dudes as I see it as a kind of "Cabaret" appeal. Where do you look to find imagery of beautiful guys? I go to artists who love men- really really love 'em. JC Leyendecker and Celia Calle. I'm always looking for more ideas- so feel free to suggest artists you like for this sort of thing!

Warm-up sketches under the cut! )

    02:52 pm - New No In-Between update!
    NiB 9, page 6 excerpt

Read No In-Between today on webcomicsnation.com!

In other news, I have commission work and writing that I am doing. Oh man, writing. Gah. I am not a great writer. I am a pretty good storyteller- but writing. Yikes. It always seems to come out the same: a pot of coffee at 2am and I finally get going.

I read on Gail Simone's page once, "I find writing to be writing writing writing." And I cannot agree with that sentiment more.

Today's No In-Between also coincides with a little comic I did for Rabid Rabbit in their NYPress issue. You can see it here on my site.

I should mention that- while I was there I did have long hair as this took place technically in 1996 and NOT during the trip that No In-Between is based on- for the purpose of this little comic I gave myself short hair since it looked better. I'm vain like that. :)

I am so, so tired, and I have no, no voice. :)

I think I'm in con-recovery mode for the next 48 hours. It's perfect for drawing with some iced tea nearby! Time to work on the next 4 pages of a proposal I'm working on, plus some superman re-designs. ;)

    09:03 am - MoCCA Post!
MoCCA Artfest is coming up---here's where I'll be, what I'll have, and why it's so worth it to come by!

    Comics Bakery Business Cards

    The Comics Bakery!

A collective of four unique and impressive artists, The Comics Bakery is your place for cool comics, T-Shirts, Doujinshi, stickers and buttons. Come to see the work of Raina Telgemeier, Dave Roman, John Green and Marion Vitus- if you're in publishing you might want to see some of our projects!
Come for the art, stay for the scones. :) I'll have some orange and chocolate-chip ones this year.

I will personally have some fabulous Scottie Dog T-Shirts for sale. They are adorable and go with everything: plaid, scones, comics, dogs, people.

    Scottie shirt design

    Gratuitous shot: )

    No In-Between!

    No In-Between

I'll have both Austria issues, and the issue leading into Germany. These issues will be in one large collection called No In-Between: Austria and go very nicely with No In-Between: Italy, if you don't have the first six issues already! For those of you on the fence about buying what you can read online, consider this: buying the issues gets you the story faster! Buy the collection now for $3, or suffer slowly for the next 5 weeks while each page comes out on Mondays. Don't suffer slowly---this isn't the kind that leads to character development or enlightenment. This kind of suffering just hurts. ;)

See the cover to No In-Between: Austria here! )

The Lulu Awards! Remember, the 2008 Lulu Awards is being held at MoCCA this year on Saturday, June 7 at 8:30 p.m. See the beautiful invite made by Hope Larson?

    2008 Lulu Invite Front

Members of Friends of Lulu, and members of MoCCA get in free! All others can purchase tickets ahead of time on the Friends of Lulu website, though a few will be available at the door- a mere $8. The awards recognize the work of women in comics- see the nominees here!

And don't you all worry about giving up an evening for it- the Lulu Awards will end at 10:00 p.m., leaving you comic jet-setters plenty of evening to make memories in the Big Apple. :)

Since this is my personal blog- I will mention that I have done a lot of work for this year's Lulu Awards. I have really worked hard to bring this about and it would mean so much to me to see the place packed with people.

    Rabid Rabbit!

    Rabid Rabbit #8 excerpt

Rabid Rabbit 8 (The White Album) releases at MoCCA Artfest, look for the Rabid Rabbits at their usual table. I have 2 pages in this phenomenal book. DO NOT MISS IT- get it for the center spread if nothing else.

    08:42 pm - It's a boy!
My horse Daisy birthed a big 'ol baby boy this morning sometime between 4am and 6am. He's a Morgan/Friesian cross, and my mother promises to email me photos soon.

Anyone want to toss some name ideas out there? Horses generally have a long fancy registered name, and then a shorter nickname.

Mother's name: RT Days of Summer (Daisy)
    Father's name: Taj Mahal (Taj)

On the table so far: TM Summer's Black Knight

02:27 pm - More of this Marion's take on Indy 4

As you may have noticed, my name is Marion. It's a pretty cool name, I've always been glad to have it.

My name also has an interesting history, especially in terms of the 20th century where it was rare enough to have not broken into, at any point in time for either male or female,  the 'top 150' of names in the USA. The common history of the name is that it is descended from Miriam, the sister of Moses and that it pays homage to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Naming your child Marion is, traditionally, using a masculine form of the name to honor Mary and to seek out her protection- Marion was given to boys and Marian to girls. It wasn't until the latter half of the 20th century that you started seeing female Marions---along about the same time when it became popular to give girls a boy name (consistent with "Shannon", "Morgan", et cetera). Regardless of the many reasons for doing this (I wonder at the influence of the women's movement---possibly a way to empower a girl by giving her a boy's name?) the media portrayal of female Marions is fairly consistent: they are usually independently minded, of strong opinion, often tomboyish (or dress in drag!), and have dark hair. Even the deviations from this rule acknowledge the rule itself: Marion in Requiem for a Dream was the archetypal Marion going down the tubes, and Marian the librarian had to be twice as tough and enchanting to make it work. (even though, technically, she was a 'Marian', and that is different from a 'Marion'.)

That all being said, Marion Ravenwood has always been a character I've loved- she embodies the modern Marion archetype completely. Independent, opinionated, physical, charming, capable and a little gender-bending when useful. And with luscious brown hair. The Marion I want to be! Even though my hair might only be an inch long. ;)

11:22 am - Continuing with the Commissions
    Commission with Architecture

A really fun one featuring Manning Hall at Brown University. John and I were thwarted by a street fair to get to the wedding via car, so as the clock was ticking and my impatience getting out of control, we jumped out of the car and started off in what I hoped was the right direction. After running through gorgeous New England university architecture, narrow streets, and up a very steep hill in 2.5" heels I was really glad to recognize the right building since I had drawn it beforehand. :D

The bride had coordinated with the Brown marching band to have them meet everyone on the steps of the Hall after the ceremony where they played some rousing tunes, including "Sweet Caroline" and "The Time Warp". Mela, you and Chris planned a super unique and fun ceremony, and we were so happy to see you guys tie the knot! Congratulations to you both! I hope I blew enough bubbles.

12:56 pm - If Adventure Had a Birthday...

[info]crypticpress and I got our heads together in order to make this card for a friend, whose birthday is TODAY! But we celebrated it last night at the Indy 4 premiere. John did the drawing and the coloring, and I inked it. If you know our friend Vince, then you know he rocks and deserves his own adventure movie series. Happy Birthday, Vince!

I have some spoilery thoughts about the movie under the cut.

And now I'm back to inking!
